Current source type inverters Current source type inverters control the output current. A large-value inductor is placed on the input DC line of the inverter in series. And the inverter acts as a current source. The inverter output needs to have characteristics of a voltage source.
Current source inverters and voltage source inverts can seen in below figure. In case of the current source inverter, the rectify is linked with the inverter through the large series inductors Ls. The SCR current output signal is a square signal because the current passing is restricted to has a constant value.
It is easier to obtain a regulated voltage than a regulated current, and voltage source type inverters can directly adjust the voltage applied to a load by varying the conduction ratio (i.e., the pulse width of a PWM signal).
These are some examples of two-level current source inverters, but there are other variations and configurations possible. Two-level topologies are simpler than three-level topologies, but can produce a voltage waveform that is less smooth and has more harmonics.
